Mapping the Early American Foreign Service

Created by Cyrus Peterpaul, Milen Ivanov, and Simeon Simeonov

Welcome to the Early American Foreign Service Mapping Project. This site is home to an interactive map which displays information about over 3000 diplomatic assignments from the American Revolution through the Civil War. The data is sourced from Walter Smith, "America's diplomats and consuls of 1776-1865 : a geographic and biographic directory of the Foreign Service from the Declaration of Independence to the end of the Civil War."

On the map, you can display information about active assignments, beginning or ending assignments, and the movement of personnel around the globe.

This work was inspired in part by Jean Bauer's work on the Early American Foreign Service Database.

This is a work in progress, so new features may be added as time goes on.
